Painting the old furniture makes them look new and beautiful. Thanks to you, I decided otherwise. It took five coats over three days of a curry colored acrylic and the first four terrified me, so I was deeply grateful for your insight!
Merci, gracias, domo arigato, thank you! Do you sand after the final coat too? Thanks for the instructions! This turned out great! I love your tips and the fact that you went light over pattern, showing that can work. Would you even ever consider doing an entire sofa like this? For a family with children? Just wondering because I have been offered the most incredible, high-end sofa beautiful and indestructible by a friend.
I love the design and sturdiness, but the color is so not us. Do I dare? Thank you! I painted an ugly old upholstered chair about a year, and have been pleased with it. Has anyone tried RE-painting a piece of painted upholstery? Oh, my goodness — I have never seen a DIY like this before! I need to show my husband this technique to update dated furniture. What a beautiful transformation. Thanks for sharing these tips! I am impressed about the transition of that chair.
Although i am with you and not sure whether I would like the leather feel over the fabric feel of the chair. How awesome. Have an ugly chair at home. Now I can get it to match right in. Wow, this looks amazing!! Thanks for the clear step-by-step instructions too! Wow how beautiful and creative! I love how both the chair and toss pillow came out — wonderful job!
The white is perfect! I have seen upholstery and fabric painting a few times before and I the first time I saw it I was so surprised that you could actually do this! Your chair really turned out great! This is just a bright spark idea, thank you so much for the courage and breakdown on how to go about to Paint Upholstery. I have some studio pieces that will change in the following week or so. I have never seen anything like this before! I could always try to pick up something at a resale shop!
How great this turned out! This is something new I learned today. I only thought you have to re-upholster fabric furniture to make it look like new again. I would have never have thought to paint fabric! I think your chair came out beautiful and feel that even if it came out like a white-faced Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton movie, it would still be nice to look at I mean, he is, right?
Great post! Add Comment. Post Comment. Would a textile paint be another option? Thank you so much for the great tutorial! Thanks a lot for this step by step guide. Great presentation and easy to understand. I am so excited to try this! Thnks so much for posting. Did you use any type of wax or seal since you did not use chalk paint? You made the chair looks so contemporary. That is so cool. I had no idea you could paint upholstery.
This is beautiful! Here is what the seat cushion looked like: I used the sandpaper and sanded the fabric to remove the pills: I know most people only sand at the end of the process to soften the fabric, but I think sanding in between coats is a good idea.
Not only did it knock down the pills, but it broke down the fibers and helped the second coat of paint stick. I sanded quite a bit. I guess you could over-sand, but you would have to be really overzealous.
Also this would be fabric dependent, since some fabrics are more delicate than others. After sanding, I applied another coat using the exact same method. I only needed that second coat to completely hide the pattern and stains.
I am really impressed with how great it turned out. Even the baby likes it. I found mine at Michael's but many people said they couldn't find it there. Newer Post Older Post Home. We had great results, but man, it was a lot of work, a lot of steps and a lot of mixing. When I stumbled onto these thrift store chairs recently, I started researching different ways to paint them without all of the extra steps and ingredients that my previous method required. I found a paint online that worked well for this.
There are definitely some pros and cons to both methods, but overall, this is the one I would use again. See how I used this upholstery paint below. The biggest difference in today's method versus my previous fabric painting tutorial is the lack of a fabric medium.
A standard way of applying paint to fabric is using a fabric or textile medium to change the consistency of acrylic paint to one that can be used on fabric without the stiffness factor. And, honestly, it's kind of a mess. I found this particular brand of paint this is not a sponsored post, I just found this paint through trial and error But, this paint enabled me to do this project in one step.
Please note that this paint has multiple finish options, be sure to look for the Velveteen version for this particular tutorial. The paint I used today is Tulip Soft Fabric Paint in Velveteen Finish I also tried their matte finish, but didn't care for the results on these particular chairs I do plan to use it on another project. Neither price is exactly ideal for the amount of paint I needed in the end, but I've had to just go with it especially since the price increase was after I was at the "no turning back" part of the project.
I started with a cream colored sateen-like club chair pictured above left that I scored at a thrift store. Actually, I scored a pair of them and will be painting the second one soon when I can talk myself into it. The chair's shape was wonderful, but the finish was a bit discolored here and there.
But it had a unique texture that proved helpful with the end result But again, it was also a very porous texture After my initial painted fabric post, I had a lot of reader questions that were questions I, myself, had before the process, too. I'll try to think ahead here and address some of these for this particular process below.
Feel free to leave me a comment with any additional questions, as well. We finished this entire room.
