Web directions what do you know
If you have a monthly Direct Debit set up with us for other ongoing services, we can arrange to take a one off payment for any services mentioned above if you prefer. This one off payment will be taken from the bank account linked to your direct debit. Please discuss this alternative payment method with your account handler.
Please be prepared for your account handler to ask you for a small deposit before we undertake any build and design work if you do not have any previous account history with us. Your monthly Direct Debit payment to us will cater for the ongoing monthly services supplied to you, including your domain, hosting, SSL certificate, email services, social media posting or any other regular services we are providing to you. Your monthly payment amount is simply the yearly cost spread over 12 months.
You will receive an automatically generated invoice by email each month. To set up a Direct Debit with us please click here. We will not be able to start working for you until we have a commitment from you and you have set up the direct debit. If we are not supplying you with any regular monthly services, there will be no need for you to set up a Direct Debit mandate with us.
We reserve the right to use your Direct Debit setup to collect any overdue funds that are outstanding for your one off services. Our standard payment terms are made clear on your invoice. Please note: we will not alter your Direct Debit unless you add or remove any services throughout the year. If you would prefer to pay annually in advance for your ongoing services, we can take the payment by direct debit each year.
We cannot register your domain or set up the hosting for your website without having a direct debit mandate in place. Your website will take a period of time to prepare for the studio, build and subsequently go live. Timescales depend on the size of your website and our workload, but typically a proof will be with you within 15 working days after the site has been released to our studio. If we have gone over the quoted lead time and you have already paid some monthly payments for hosting, domain, SSL certificate etc before the website is live then those payments will be credited back to you when you receive your one off invoice for the build of your website.
If there are delays from your end, for example we have not received the complete content text, photos, imagery etc and we have been hosting a holding page since you instructed us to go ahead, we cannot issue a refund as costs are incurred for hosting the holding page. If, in the unusual scenario, we have repeatedly requested final sign off from you after completion of our work, or we have not been able to finish the work due to incomplete content then we reserve the right to invoice you for the work we have done and if needed, take payment via the Direct Debit Mandate.
If your account remains in arrears without any contact from you, your website files will be removed and replaced with the following holding page until payment is received. You may have a change of circumstances; a lottery win, a golden job offer or you simply feel, in hindsight, you cannot cope with the basics setting up your email address with the details provided or the editing of your website. Whatever stage you are at with us, you can cancel your services at any time but we will require payment for the work we have done.
We will automatically take payment from your Direct Debit initially, then cancel your mandate. If you have paid a deposit, any remaining balance after our costs have been covered, will be returned to you. For example, if you cancel the domain, something we pay for up front for a year at a time, the annual cost will be charged on to you.
If we have produced any printed materials for you, but you have not had the website built, the print work will be charged but the website will not. Usually because you have asked us to purchase a domain. We purchase this in advance from Nominet, and subsequently pay them annually for your domain. A reminder that if you have paid some monthly hosting payments before the website is live, those payments less the cost of the domain and email services that Web Directions have paid for in advance , will automatically be deducted from your one off invoice for the build of your website.
This invoice will be sent to you when you have approved the website and it is live. Please note, depending on each individual scenario, that we reserve the right to retain hosting charges if the website has been held up in the development stage for an extended period of time as a result of a delay your end.
If you have been sent a proof link to your website then we have been hosting the development version of your website. We hope that the level of support and service you receive from us will be enough to make you want to stay but we understand that sometimes clients decide to stop using our services. You are free to leave at anytime. As long as your payments are up to date we can simply email you the digital files, or supply them to you on a USB stick, or via We Transfer to give to your new supplier.
You are welcome to view our terms and conditions here. You may have noticed that online security is on the rise and we recommend that you get an SSL certificate Secure Sockets Layer for your website , particularly if you have a contact form or online ordering. An SSL certificate will display a little padlock in the browser to show that data collected through the website is secure.
It gives users more confidence in you, and it may also help with your google search ranking, more information can be found here. Following GDPR, all websites should have a privacy policy. If you do not supply your own privacy policy, then we will use our generic one. It is all standard stuff these days, but you will need to read through this privacy policy to make sure you understand what you are agreeing to. Yes, all our website are built using WordPress and can be edited and updated by you, the client.
We will supply you with the username and password to enable you to change photos and text. However, we do ask our clients to leave the bespoke graphics, and any structural changes to us to amend for you. After your website has gone live, we can offer you a 1 hour training session where we will show you how to edit your wesbite. We also have a number of helpful user guides on our downloads page.
You simply supply your changes to your account handler who will let you know how much they will cost before we go ahead. There will always be issues that slip through the cracks but with a great community and the ability to npm audit fix , you can audit your packages, show where the vulnerabilities lie and then attempt to resolve this with a version update.
Working at CarsGuide has taught me the importance of a good company culture. Michelle Gleeson had a great talk on the importance of company culture, why we need to focus so much on it now compared to the past and how you can help change the culture within your company.
I really loved this talk as it drove home why all companies should spend time investing in their teams, not just in new tech and new developers but by bringing the teams together.
Michelle insisted on bragging about one screw up that you did per week each in a retro or stand up. You learn from these mistakes and it makes the team more open to discussions. I also really liked the talk of a code retreat, where your team goes away for a weekend to up-skill but also to have fun.
You throw away the code at the end of the trip and come back a stronger team. It was a refreshing talk and made me appreciate what we already have in our team but also some great tips for how we can make it even better. Yuriy Dybskiy believes that there needs to be more experimentation within the community and within browsers.
He did just this by creating his own mobile browser called Puma Browser. So what makes his browser different? Interledger is an open protocol suite for sending payments across different ledgers. Like routers on the Internet, connectors route packets of money across independent payment networks. The open architecture and minimal protocol enable interoperability for any value transfer system.
Interledger is not tied to any one company, blockchain, or currency. Sites have to make money for their content and ads are of course some sites main revenue source. The way Puma Browser uses ILP is by paying for the content you like and read but still keeping the privacy that people love today. This ticker will go up as you browse sites. This is something we have already implemented within our own project but his talk made me look back at the process on why we chose to use a PWA and ways we could even improve our PWA.
Within our own projects, I think we can take another look at how we use a PWA and really fine tune it to create a better experience.
Going to wds18 has given me inspiration to attend more conferences. Meeting tech folks like myself and learning from each other is pretty amazing! Thanks for an amazing few days Web Directions.
